These look great, Tom, and well written as always. The last pair of contemporary made 501's I bought was over 10 years ago, and it still sticks in my mind how quickly they wore out- under a year of light use and they were done. Never again, it's a false economy.
Well, Levis do now do some Selvedge stuff, not sure what it's like, though they do seem to sit at higher price point than a lot of the Japanese denim so it's not that attractive for me personally.
Trying on my pair of Sugar Cane denim in a makeshift dressing room on a hot Tokyo day remains one of the most vivid memories I have related to clothing. They were just different, they fit OK, but FELT great. Now a few washes in, they are my favorite jeans of all time.
